Metro Police said a 41-year-old woman was critically injured early this morning when the car she was driving in the southwest valley failed to make a turn and ended up in a desert area.

Police said the accident happened at 3:56 a.m. near Fort Apache and Cactus avenues.

A preliminary police investigation indicates Michelle Pierson was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Corvette south on Fort Apache Avenue when she failed to slow and make a left turn as the road ends at Cactus Avenue, officials said.

The vehicle traveled southeast into a desert area before landing in a dry riverbed, police said.

Pierson was taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit with critical injuries, police said. Her passengers, 35-year-old Jonathan Ellison and 27-year-old Chas Guertin, were to taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The accident remain under investigation.
