Bill would require parental consent before tanning

CARSON CITY – The tanned look is not healthy and it could be deadly, says Sen. Allison Copening.

She introduced a bill Monday to require juveniles to have the consent of their parents before entering a tanning salon.

Getting too much sun and time under the tanning rays might cause skin cancer, says Copening, D-Las Vegas.

Senate Bill 291 would require tanning salons to make sure anyone under 18 has the permission of his or her parents before starting the procedure. Businesses would be liable for a civil suit from parents if they failed to check and put children under the rays.

Copening said there are creams that can be used to give a person the tanned look.

There was a suggestion that the state hire inspectors to keep youngsters out of tanning businesses, but Copening said that idea was discarded because of the state’s financial burden.

The bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Labor and Energy for study.
