Las Vegas mayoral candidate, Carolyn Goodman, talks with patrons of The Beat Coffee Shop in downtown Las Vegas Friday, February 11, 2011 as she campaigns for the seat being left by her husband.

A teenage boy made the bad decision a few weeks ago to vandalize a "Carolyn Goodman for Mayor" campaign sign.

He got caught.

A group of Goodman volunteers happened to be driving by and caught the teen in the act.

They didn't report him to police. Instead, they decided a better punishment would be facing Goodman herself.

So on Saturday, the boy and his father went to Cardenas market to meet up with Goodman as she campaigned. The boy, who looked mortified, apologized as his father watched.

The teen is lucky he wasn't caught by Mayor Oscar Goodman. If he were, he might be missing his thumbs today.

Oscar Goodman once proposed cutting off the thumbs of graffiti artists caught defacing freeways.

"Understand you caught an early break," Oscar Goodman told the boy.

"You do what your dad says," Carolyn Goodman warned.

A Goodman campaign worker said he planned to help the boy get into an after-school art program to find a more useful outlet for his energy.

As is the case in most campaigns, all of the candidates for Las Vegas mayor have had to contend with vandalism.

Goodman's campaign manager Bradley Mayer said several Goodman signs had her eyes cut out.

Gary Gray, Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani's campaign manager, said Giunchigliani's face has been cut out of several campaign signs as well.

City Councilman Steve Ross has had posters stolen and defaced, as has businessman Victor Chaltiel and Clark County Commissioner Larry Brown.

"There is always a certain amount of vandalism," Brown's campaign consultant Jim Ferrence said. But he noted fewer incidents in this election than in past cycles.
