The final episode of HBO’s Big Love played like a microcosm of the polygamy drama’s five-season run: meandering, melodramatic and sporadically miraculous. For 60 of its 70 minutes, it felt less like a finale than a continuation, as we suffered through more drivel from Barb about priesthood authority, Ben’s lame attempt to win back an ex by naming a star after her and Margene’s shocking announcement that she’d ... considered booking a trip on a medical aid ship. The memorable scenes came in a flurry toward the end: Bill’s three wives hopping in a new car and speeding off on the freeway (they came back), Bill experiencing ghostly visions while sermonizing to his plural-marriage throng, and Bill’s dad (apparently) euthanizing Bill’s mom. Then Bill got shot to death. By a neighbor. Who might have logged five minutes of air time in the show’s five years. And then we flashed forward to an overly informational final glimpse of the family post-Bill (spoiler: They stay together). Sorry Big Love, Six Feet Under spits on your grave for best HBO series ender.
