Three questions with comedian Hal Sparks

Hal Sparks

A man of many talents, Sparks also is a musician and actor.

Are Vegas audiences harder or easier than most?

Vegas has the Whitman’s Sampler of audiences. They come from all different places, so you have to do some crowd psychology. You have to find the heartbeat of the room. It doesn’t shift my jokes, but it shifts my timing and my attention.

Is it fair to say that red states are often the punch lines of your jokes?

Yes, because they’re largely inflexible and intolerant. They almost pride themselves on it. And I grew up in the South, so I’m allowed to call that stuff out. I can dissect it. I’m from a one-road town with 46 people in it.

Comedian Hal Sparks

Las Vegas Weekly's Rick Lax sits down with comedian Hal Sparks to discuss small town life, Botox, magic, and the difference between reality TV and "docusoaps." If you like what you see, catch Hal's standup act at the Las Vegas Hilton on March 23-27, April 13-17, and May 25-29. 10:00 PM.

What does the future of reality TV hold?

First of all, most “reality” shows aren’t reality at all. They’re game shows with no prize. Like Rock of Love. His aren’t genuine feelings. Then again, Bob Barker didn’t really care whether or not you won the toaster. Sorry to shatter everyone’s dreams.
