Group that helps trauma victims seeks additional volunteers

A non-profit organization that provides immediate on-scene support to emotionally traumatized people in Southern Nevada is looking for volunteers "to help other citizens on the worst day of their life," officials said.

The Trauma Intervention Program of Southern Nevada, known as TIP, sends volunteers to scenes of sudden or unexpected death, violent crimes and sexual assaults, among other incidents, to offer emotional and practical support to family, friends, witnesses or victims.

Volunteers, who must have no criminal record and a clean driving history, work three 12-hour shifts per month after attending a training academy and pass a three-month field training program, officials said. Volunteers also attend monthly continuing education meetings.

Metro Police are a partner with TIP, which was founded in 1985 in San Diego. TIP of Southern Nevada formed in 1994.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should call 702-288-0906 or visit the organization's website at www.tipoflasvegas.org.
