LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Our children need programs intact to learn life skills

As our communities wait to see what effect state and federal funding cuts will have on our agencies, entities and programs, I wonder why educational opportunities for our youth are always on the chopping block.

As a society, we have always known our future depends on what we teach our children, not only in school but also within social programs.

Youth growing up in rural areas have limited opportunities to learn life skills. There are no after-school programs and limited entertainment. As a parent, I am aware that school districts sponsor extracurricular activities, but household income is the true eligibility criteria.

Our children need and have a right to free opportunities to socialize, to nurture their talents and learn new ones, to learn the power of positive choices, and to develop healthy habits and leadership skills.

I grew up within the Cooperative Extension family. Not only was my father a County Extension agent for 30 years, but I also have wonderful memories of 10 years as a 4-H member. However, even more important, I realize and acknowledge the many skills I developed in 4-H, skills I use every day.

Beyond the traditional projects, which provided numerous learning opportunities, I learned citizenship, patriotism, volunteerism, respect and responsibility. I developed skills such as leadership, writing and public speaking. I learned not only how to be organized, but how to organize. Through 4-H, I expanded my world outside my community, meeting youth and leaders throughout the state and the country. I learned the true meaning of the word “member.”

I acknowledge the difficult task facing our Legislature and our state’s budget crisis. However, our children should not suffer disproportionate funding cuts. I urge Nevada’s elected officials to represent those who do not yet vote but will.
