LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Funding war at the expense of public services

Thanks for publishing Bob Herbert’s column, “Off balance and losing our way,” in Tuesday’s Las Vegas Sun. Herbert laments our “pouring shiploads of cash into yet another war, this time in Libya, while simultaneously demolishing school budgets, closing libraries, laying off teachers and police officers, and generally letting the bottom fall out of the quality of life at home.”

We are spending $300 million each day in the war in Afghanistan. That is enough to hire 4,000 teachers for a year. And we’ve spent another $500 million on the war in Libya.

And at the same time our leaders in Carson City and Washington keep slashing away at budgets for urgently needed domestic services. Where is the public’s voice of outrage at such perverted priorities?
