A local medical marijuana user fights the feds to get a firearm

Handgun pot leaf

With no exceptions pertaining to medical marijuana in the federal law barring the sale of guns to medical marijuana users, one local is suing the U.S. Attorney General and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

We know two things about Nevadan S. Rowan Wilson:

1. She has really bad cramps; and 2. She wants to protect herself from physical violence. But the federal government is making Wilson pick between her treatment and her safety. The feds think Wilson wants to have her cake and eat it, too.

Of course, that cake is laced with pot and it’s got a Smith & Wesson .357 magnum pistol baked into it.

Wilson, a medical marijuana user, is suing the U.S. Attorney General and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives because she was denied a handgun. In September, the ATF sent gun sellers a letter saying that federal law bars sales of guns to any person who is an “unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance.” The letter said: “There are no exceptions in federal law for marijuana purportedly used for medicinal purposes, even if such use is sanctioned by state law.”

So now, Wilson is taking up the case. She might have a strong argument, but if she loses, well, I don’t think our nation will crumble. Seriously, how many other medical marijuana-using Second Amendment advocates do you know? I know zero. But maybe that’s because they spend all their time hanging out with the pro-life civil union advocates.
