Tajon Allen returned the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown Thursday to lead the Bishop Gorman High football team to a 56-0 victory against visiting Bonanza.

The win gave the two-time defending state champion Gaels (10-1 overall) their fifth consecutive Southwest Division crown. Gorman, which is ranked No. 5 nationally by Rivals.com, has only surrendered 13 points in eight league games.

“Our kids have been mature all year with what we need to do (to win),” Gorman coach Tony Sanchez said. “For the first 11 games, not once did our kids come out and play down.”

Shaquille Powell had 117 rushing yards and two touchdowns for Gorman, while junior quarterback Anu Solomon connected with receiver Ryan Smith for a pair of scoring strikes. Solomon and Lorenzo Fertitta each added rushing touchdowns.

Defensively, Sanchez said defensive lineman Isaiah Nacua had three sacks while lineman Zack Singer also had a good defensive game. "Those two really stood out defensively," the coach said.

Gorman, which has won eight straight playoff games, opens the postseason next Friday by hosting Cheyenne.
