Coronado closed its season on a high note Thursday by defeating visiting Virgin Valley 36-16.

Senior running back Chris Johnson rushed for three touchdowns in the victory and led Coronado to one of its best offensive outputs of the year.

“The kids did a pretty good job with a lot of distractions going on with our program in the last week,” Coronado coach Lance Cooper said. “I can’t get into those distractions, but our kids battled through them and didn’t let it affect us.”

Coronado finished a game short of .500 with a 4-5 record, which made the season the best the program has put together in the last four years.

The Cougars came close to making it even better with narrow losses to division opponents like Liberty, Foothill and Silverado. The Coronado defense held its own all year and that was no different against Virgin Valley.

Colton Wilden and Jason Warren led a suffocating effort on that side of the ball.

“It’s my goal to create and solidify some tradition with this program,” Cooper said. “It’s a lot of work, but we’re headed there. For the first time this year, we didn’t get pushed around. The kids bought into a lot of what we were saying.”
