Just buckling up isn’t enough when the passenger is a child. Experts suggest children use safety seats every time they get in the car.

But experts also say many child safety seats are not properly installed.

The Dorel Juvenile Group, the largest manufacture of car seats in the country, and AAA are sponsoring a safety event in Las Vegas this week to try to help address the problem.

There will be safety technicians available Friday at the AAA office at 3312 Charleston Blvd. from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. to do free safety checks and seat installations.

The event precedes National Child Passenger Safety Week, which is Sept. 19 – 24.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration said as many as 75 percent of car seats are not properly installed.

On average, four children die and more than 500 are injured in crashes each day.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Child safety seats reduce the risk of death in car crashes by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers ages one to four.

Experts suggest all children under 8 years old or 4 feet 9 inches tall use a booster seat and everyone under the age of 13 should ride in the back seat.
