1-year-old killed at his birthday party by family’s 120-pound dog identified

Dog attacks, kills infant

KSNV coverage of fatal dog attack and interview with grief-stricken father, April 28, 2012.

The 1-year-old boy who died after the family’s pet dog attacked him at his birthday party has been identified by the Clark County coroner's office as Jeremiah Eskew-Shahan.

The boy was at his grandmother’s Henderson residence on Navarre Lane near Arroyo Grande Boulevard celebrating his birthday on Friday when he crawled toward the family’s 6-year-old, 120 pound Mastiff/Rhodesian mix to pet the dog, Henderson Police said.

The dog latched onto the boy’s head and began to shake him as the grandmother tried to pull the boy away from the dog, police said.

Henderson Fire paramedics took the toddler to St. Rose Dominican Hospital–Siena Campus where he was transported by helicopter to University Medical Center’s Trauma Unit.

The boy died at the hospital Saturday. The family turned the dog over to Henderson Animal Control.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

  1. God bless little Jeremiah. I hope the dad and mom find the strength to get through this.

  2. Horrible incident. Condolences to the family.

I thought it strange when this story first came out - the "family dog" attacked the 1 year old.

What did that mean? I thought the dog was owned by the parents of this poor child. But it appears that the dog was NOT a "family dog." It may have belonged to grandma but it was NOT a "family dog."

A family dog is a dog that lives with you and your immediate family - not Uncle Joe's dog or Grandma's dog.

This story gives the impression that the dog was owned by the child's parents and lived in the home where the child resided.

This is NOT the case. The dog was the grandmother's dog - Yes, the child was around the dog when visiting grandma, but it was NOT the family dog. It was grandmas dog and the dog lived at grandma's house.

Nonetheless, all caution must be taken - even if the dog was a "family dog" and lived with the child - you must not let your guard down.
