After a week of rain and lower temperatures, the region is about to experience a return to extreme heat this week.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning from Wednesday through Friday evening for Clark County, including the Las Vegas Valley and Lake Mead Recreational Area.

The temperature is expected to reach 111 degrees Wednesday and Thursday, and 112 degrees Friday in the Las Vegas Valley. In Death Valley, temperatures are forecast in the 120s, topping out at 126 on Friday, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service said that while the temperatures may not reach the level of the July 9-11 heat wave, the duration of excessive heat could be longer.

“The combination of very hot afternoon temperatures and very warm overnight lows will result in very oppressive conditions,” officials said.

The National Weather Service warned that people working or engaging in strenuous activities outdoors are at risk of heat stroke. High overnight temperatures will also make it difficult to recover from the heat, especially for the elderly and homeless, the agency added.

To prevent heat-related illnesses, officials are advising people to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, avoid being out in the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.

The watch also covers Southern California and western Arizona.
