Fire causes $50,000 in damage to Henderson home

A late afternoon fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to a single-story, single-family house in Henderson on Monday.

Henderson firefighters responded after witnessing smoke and fire coming from the garage of a house located in the area of Horizon Ridge Parkway and Lemongold Street, near U.S. 95.

The house's residents were outside attempting to put the fire out with a garden hose when the first fire engine arrived. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within 10 minutes, but it had caused extensive damage to the garage and its contents.

All the residents and pets were able to exit the house safely, although one man suffered burns to his face and neck. The injured man was treated and released at the scene.

No firefighters were hurt in the fire. Southwest Gas and NV Energy also responded to the fire and secured utilities to the home.

A fire investigator determined the cause of the fire to be an improperly discarded cigarette, officials said.

The fire displaced two men and a woman; they are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
