Sludge spill closes one-block portion of Nellis Boulevard

Sewage spill closes road

Motorists traveling along Nellis Boulevard in the northern valley may have to find a new route until later this evening after a sludge spill occurred around 9 a.m. today.

A one-block stretch of Nellis is shut down, from East Harris Avenue to East Bonanza Road, said Michelle Booth, public information officer with the Nevada Department of Transportation.

The spill occurred after the rear hatch of a Clark County Water Reclamation truck opened, spilling 2,000 to 3,000 gallons of sludge onto the roadway, said Marty Flynn, a spokesman for the Clark County Water Reclamation District. Sludge is the solid byproduct of the water treatment process, he added.

“While the sludge is from the treatment facility, it represents only a minor health concern,” Flynn said. He noted that anyone who comes into contact with the material only needs to wash themselves with soap and water.

A hazardous materials team was called to clean up the spill. The road surface  is being milled-out and will be repaved before reopening about 7 p.m., Booth said late this afternoon.

CORRECTION: This version corrects that the spill was sludge and not raw sewage, as first reported by NDOT. | (July 11, 2012)
