Careless smoking blamed for fire that guts condominium

Fire

An early morning fire caused by careless smoking gutted a condominium in western Las Vegas, fire officials said.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue responded about 3 a.m. to the condominium at Bradord Place Townhomes, near Pennwood Avenue and Valley View Boulevard.

The blaze was threatening the rest of the five-unit building, prompting a second-alarm response, officials said. Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the one-story condominium at 3113 Chadford Place, officials said.

An occupant of the home was taken to University Medical Center with possible smoke inhalation, officials said. No one else was injured.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control within 25 minutes, officials said. The fire gutted the condominium, causing $80,000 damage, officials said. A unit next door sustained minor water damage.

Fire investigators ruled the blaze accidental. The Red Cross is assisting two adults and one child displaced by the fire.
