Letter to the editor:

Efforts helped kidney programs

Regarding the House Ethics Committee’s investigation of Rep. Shelley Berkley:

I’m a Republican, but a Nevadan first who cares greatly for his community.

That’s why I join in defense of Rep. Shelley Berkley and her actions on behalf of hundreds of kidney transplant patients in our state and especially Southern Nevada.

I might not always agree with her, but I’ve never doubted her heart, commitment and most importantly, her personal integrity. Apparently, neither did stalwart Republicans Dean Heller and Jon Porter, who supported Berkley’s efforts to save the kidney transplant program at University Medical Center.

I am confident the congressional examination of this matter will find she acted to improve the lives of some very ill people in Southern Nevada and preserved an important program.

Perhaps being married to a doctor who treats kidney patients provided Berkley with nothing more than keen insight into the daunting challenges Southern Nevada patients and their families face throughout the transplant process.
