Las Vegas woman accused of military base breast implant scam

A 31-year-old Las Vegas woman is being accused of running a $19,000 breast implant scam at an Air Force base hospital.

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto announced this week that Shanita Flax was indicted on 18 counts of theft and one count of attempted theft.

Masto says Flax worked as a civilian contractor in Nellis Air Force Base's hospital from 2008 to September 2010, and was responsible for discussing pricing with breast implant candidates.

Government insurance covers the cost of reconstructive surgery for women who've had breast cancer or an occupational injury, but doesn't cover purely cosmetic implants.

Flax is accused of taking cash from cosmetic patients but ordering the implants as if they were for cancer payments, then pocketing the money.

No phone number is listed for Flax.
