A man wanted in connection with a double slaying in North Las Vegas was captured Monday morning at the Mexican border as he tried to re-enter the United States, North Las Vegas Police said.

Jose Alejandro Gonzales was detained on a murder warrant by immigration officials at the San Ysidro border crossing near San Diego, police said.

The 22-year-old, who goes by the name Smokey, is accused of shooting four people April 26 at a home in North Las Vegas, killing two men — Erik Armando Quezada-Morales, 33, and James Headrick, 24, both of North Las Vegas, police said. Two women suffered serious injuries.

Gonzales and his alleged accomplice, 31-year-old Ivonne Cabrera, each were charged with two counts of murder with use of a deadly weapon, two counts of attempted murder with use of a deadly weapon, one count of conspiracy to commit murder and one count of burglary while in possession of a deadly weapon, according to a criminal complaint filed in early May.

Police arrested Cabrera the day after the shooting. She remains in custody at the Clark County Detention Center without bail, according to jail records.

Detectives have traveled to San Diego to interview Gonzales and seek his extradition back to Nevada, police said.

A female victim told investigators a prior argument — possibly involving Cabrera not returning a borrowed vehicle — may have sparked the shooting, according to an arrest report.

Cabrera told detectives she had smoked methamphetamine before the shooting and that Gonzales told her they were only going to scare the victims, the report states.
