Police standoff ends when man kills himself

Updated Friday, May 4, 2012 | 4:06 p.m.

A standoff between a suicidal man and Metro Police in the northwest valley ended Friday afternoon when the man killed himself, authorities said.

The man phoned police shortly after 10 a.m., telling them that he was despondent and was going to kill himself, police spokesman officer Marcus Martin said.

Police responded to a home on Alpine Brooks Avenue, and a standoff began when the man refused to come out, Martin said.

As SWAT team negotiators talked to the man, traffic was closed in both directions on Rainbow Boulevard between Tropical Parkway and Ambiance Lane, Martin said.

At about 3:20 p.m., the standoff ended when the man killed himself, police said.

Police were working to reopen the road.
