I love the United States of America. I remember when we were the best at everything, the envy of the world, a place everyone dreamed of calling it home. Everyone knew that if you worked hard, you could realize the American dream. We were extraordinary; from the end of World War II and through the 1970s, we were on top. Could our status in the eyes of the world be slipping away? How can you maintain an unequaled level of excellence and respect with only bravado?

How can anyone consider a country exceptional when more than 50 million people lack health care? Can a country with the largest gap in the world between the wealthy and the rest of the population be exceptional? Can a country where the middle-class wages have been stagnant for more than 30 years be exceptional? Can a country that has allowed the wealthy to buy its government to do their bidding be exceptional? Can a country where voter suppression, intolerance of minorities, denying women’s rights, and attempted abandonment of the poor and elderly be exceptional? Bravado alone does not create an exceptional country, its policies do. It is not anti-American to say this exceptional country of extraordinary greatness may be slipping away. God bless the United States of America!
