Basic High School’s Antraye Johnson catches a pass during practice at the school in Henderson Monday, Aug. 13, 2012.

Junior Antraye Johnson returned the opening kickoff of Basic High’s season back for a touchdown, and everything else followed suit Friday in a 47-14 victory at Rancho High.

Fact is, Johnson, who finished his evening at halftime with two receiving touchdowns in addition to that score, wasn’t even close to the best thing Basic had going. That would be the defense, which surrendered just five yards in the first half as Basic took a 41-0 lead into halftime.

“Defense played well and really shut them down,” Basic coach Jeff Cahill said. “We were happy with it.”

UNLV target DeVonte Boyd also caught two touchdowns in the first half and took a seat next to fellow All-Sun teammate Johnson for the rest of the game. With the game in hand, Cahill used his backups for the final 24 minutes.

“It’s good for getting the second- and third-team kids in, trying to get them experience,” Cahill said. “You’re going to need those kids.”
