Palo vs. Liberty and Gorman's national test headline busy week

Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer bring all the ranting and raving any Southern Nevada high school football fan could ever want on the fourth episode of this year's podcast. Brewer further fuels his detractors at Centennial and predicts a lopsided victory in favor of Bishop Gorman. Does Keefer agree? Listen to find out.

As soon as Bishop Gorman High football coach Tony Sanchez starting breaking down film of his team’s Friday night opponent, the coach realized they would be in for a tough game.

Bergen Catholic out of New Jersey, which is ranked No. 28 by Rivals.com, scored 58 points last week in a blowout victory against St. Anthony’s (N.J.) to open the season in snapping a 29-game St. Anthony winning streak.

On film, Bergen Catholic appears to be even better.

“They look really good,” Sanchez said. “They are extremely well-coached. They are disciplined and play with discipline. The fly around the football field. We are going to have to bring a lot of energy to match them.”

Gorman (2-0), which is ranked No. 11 by Rivals, is expected to have its hand full against visiting Bergen Catholic when the two battle at 7 p.m. at Fertitta Field. The game will be televised by Fox Sports live in 10 regional markets, but shown on a tape delay at 11:30 p.m. in Las Vegas on Cox cable channel 49.

Gorman’s most recent game was two weeks ago against St. Louis High of Hawaii. The Gaels led 49-13 late in the third quarter but surrendered a few late touchdowns to damper a 52-40 win.

If the Gaels play defensively like they did at the end of the Hawaii game, they could be in for a long night. Sanchez, however, doesn’t expect a repeat performance.

“We got a little lethargic at the end,” Sanchez said. “We stopped playing with sharpness. We’ve addressed that (during the off week).”

This will be three-time defending state champion Gorman’s third of four games against out-of-state competition before beginning play against Nevada schools in the Southwest League. Gorman opened with a 29-22 victory against Our Lady of Good Counsel from Maryland and has never trailed this year.

The Gaels offense has been virtually unstoppable, scoring in the first drive on each game, and averaging 400 yards of offense and nearly 40 points per game. More important for Sanchez, the Gaels were an improved team in Hawaii.

“We made some leaps from week one to two,” the coach said.

Tickets can be purchased ($10 for adults and $5 for students) in the school’s athletic office, which is open from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The school is located at 5959 S. Hualapai Way.

Fox will rebroadcast the Gorman game at 10 p.m. Sunday and at 2:30 p.m. Monday on Cox cable channel 50.
