Palo vs. Liberty and Gorman's national test headline busy week

Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer bring all the ranting and raving any Southern Nevada high school football fan could ever want on the fourth episode of this year's podcast. Brewer further fuels his detractors at Centennial and predicts a lopsided victory in favor of Bishop Gorman. Does Keefer agree? Listen to find out.

It’s rivalry week on the local high school football gridiron.

Foothill visits Silverado in the Victory Bell game, Canyon Springs hosts Cheyenne in a battle of schools located about two miles apart on Alexander Road, and visiting Bonanza and Spring Valley play in the annual Banner Game.

Let’s not forget about the most significant rivalry game being played tonight.

Eldorado couldn't extend its win streak to four games in the annual Cleat Game, as it lost 52-14 at Chaparral. The streak would've equaled Eldorado’s longest in a rivalry that dates back to the 1970s. The bronzed cleat belonged to former Los Angeles Rams great Merlin Olsen, who donated it to the rivalry.

Two other less high-profile rivalry games include Desert Oasis at Sierra Vista and Centennial at Shadow Ridge. When Desert Oasis opened five years ago, it took most of its students from neighboring Sierra Vista.

While the rivalry games will have high interest in certain Southern Nevada neighborhoods, Bishop Gorman's game against visiting Bergen Catholic of New Jersey will have national appeal. Both teams are ranked high by multiple polls, and the game will be televised by Fox Sports.

Gorman, which is ranked No. 9 by Rivals.com, is playing on television for the third straight game to open the season.

The Gaels are 45-3 over the past four years, with all three defeats coming to a national opponent. Bergen Catholic, which nearly scored 60 points last week and runs a complicated no-huddle offense, could give the Gorman defense fits in becoming the fourth team to notch a win against the Gaels.

Case Keefer and I will keep everyone posted on all the games. Check back later when scores become final to see if your team won.
