The Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company was founded in 1852 and produced wagons but went out of business in the late 1960s. The annual parade serves as a kick-off to the Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas auto auction at the Mandalay Bay. The auction runs Thursday through Saturday.

Normally a haven for taxicabs, limousines and the occasional exotic car, the Las Vegas Strip was briefly taken over Wednesday afternoon as a pack of classic cars muscled their way down the famed boulevard and toward Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

Lined up two by two, about 80 cars, including Mustangs, Vipers, Corvettes and Thunderbirds from all eras, outfitted in a spectrum of blacks, yellows, reds and gleaming chrome, paraded down Las Vegas Boulevard as part of the kickoff to Barrett-Jackson’s fifth annual Las Vegas Collector Car Auction.

The cars in Wednesday’s road rallies, which were driven by members of local auto clubs, started at the Las Vegas Convention Center and made their way south, aided by several Metro Police officers who helped control traffic.

Upon reaching Mandalay Bay, the cars parked and popped their hoods, giving curious onlookers a chance to check out the cars, take photos and talk shop with the drivers.

The Barrett-Jackson auction begins at 4 p.m. Thursday and continues through Saturday at Mandalay Bay. It’s expected to bring tens of thousands of bidders, consignors and car enthusiasts to Las Vegas to buy, sell and appreciate collectible cars.
