Man in wheelchair dies after being hit by school bus

Updated Thursday, April 4, 2013 | 9:40 p.m.

A man in a wheelchair hit by a school bus died Thursday in the hospital from his injuries sustained in the collision, Metro Police said.

The accident happened about 11:50 a.m. at Maryland Parkway and Reno Avenue, Metro Officer Jose Hernandez said. The 81-year-old man was crossing in a marked crosswalk east on Maryland Parkway, when the school bus made a turn at a stop sign and hit him.

The man was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

The bus was on its way to pick up children from Dailey Elementary School, Clark County School District spokeswoman Melinda Malone said.

“We are saddened by the news of this terrible tragedy,” interim Superintendent Pat Skorkowski said in a statement. “The Clark County School District extends our deepest sympathy to the victim and his family. Safety is our top priority, and we will fully cooperate in the investigation of this matter.”

The driver will be placed on unpaid administrative leave, pending the outcome of a School District investigation, Malone said.

Sun reporter Brian Nordli contributed to this story.

  1. Could be the wheelchair bound mans fault but I have had school buses pass me while going the speed limit.

  2. @BRASS "...when the school bus made a turn at a stop sign and hit him."

What does a school bus passing you have to do with this situation? If anything it has to do with the bus driver not paying attention to foot traffic at a corner, not speeding.

  3. Didn't a city bus hit someone in a wheel chair earlier this year? In broad daylight....

  4. This is the second intersection accident involving a very long vehicle. As long vehicles such as busses and tractor-trailers turn very wide, I would be interested in knowing if those who were hit left the curb prior to the vehicles completing the turn, or if the rear of the vehicles went up onto the sidewalk because the turn wasn't wide enough.
