Updated Thursday, April 4, 2013 | 9:40 p.m.

A man in a wheelchair hit by a school bus died Thursday in the hospital from his injuries sustained in the collision, Metro Police said.

The accident happened about 11:50 a.m. at Maryland Parkway and Reno Avenue, Metro Officer Jose Hernandez said. The 81-year-old man was crossing in a marked crosswalk east on Maryland Parkway, when the school bus made a turn at a stop sign and hit him.

The man was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

The bus was on its way to pick up children from Dailey Elementary School, Clark County School District spokeswoman Melinda Malone said.

“We are saddened by the news of this terrible tragedy,” interim Superintendent Pat Skorkowski said in a statement. “The Clark County School District extends our deepest sympathy to the victim and his family. Safety is our top priority, and we will fully cooperate in the investigation of this matter.”

The driver will be placed on unpaid administrative leave, pending the outcome of a School District investigation, Malone said.

Sun reporter Brian Nordli contributed to this story.
