More money considered for Las Vegas psychiatric hospital

CARSON CITY — The Legislative Interim Finance Committee has set a special meeting for Aug. 6 to hear requests to put more money into the Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital in Las Vegas.

The Legislature set aside $4 million in a contingency fund to make improvements at the hospital, which has been criticized for putting patients on buses to other cities without adequate treatment plans.

Mike Willden, director of the state Department of Health and Human Services, earlier this week outlined a plan for spending the money, including hiring 23 more staff members and making improvements to house more patients.

A team from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reinspected the hospital last week and was expected to decide this month whether to reimburse the state for Medicaid and Medicare patients.
