A 2nd fire breaks out at vacant apartment building

Fire

A vacant two-story apartment building caught fire today for a second time in less than a week.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue responded about 2:45 a.m. to the boarded up Avis Apartments building at 223 N. Ninth St. Firefighters extinguished the fire in just two minutes, fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

No one was injured, and no one was found inside the building.

A mattress caught fire in the same building on Thanksgiving morning, Szymanski said. Fire investigators believe the fires were caused by homeless people staying in the building, because smoking paraphernalia was found inside, Szymanski said.

The fire is under investigation.
