Metro officers shoot, kill man who pointed gun at them

Updated Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013 | 6:44 p.m.

Metro Police shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at officers after threatening his parents early this morning.

Investigators believe the man may have fired at least one round before police arrived about 2 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 3900 block of Mountain Vista Street. Officer Laura Meltzer said the man was “armed with multiple guns” when three officers shot at him. Police initially said the man fired at them first, but Meltzer later clarified that he only pointed a weapon at them.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was rushed to Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center, where he later died.

Dispatchers sent officers to the home after receiving a 911 call from the location with an open line. Arguing could be heard in the background and someone asked another person to put a gun down.

A family inside a neighboring apartment said two bullets pierced their front door and struck two couches, though police have not yet determined whose weapon they came from.

No one inside the neighboring home was hurt, though the bullets came close to a mother and her 1-year-old daughter.

The three officers involved in the shooting were placed on routine administrative leave. Meltzer said they will be identified in two days.
