Fire burns unoccupied house in northwest valley

An unoccupied home caught fire Saturday night near U.S. 95 and Jones Boulevard.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue responded about 9:45 p.m. to reports of a fire at 321 Westeria Ave., a home that had been deemed unsafe to live in according to a notice on the house, spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

Firefighters arrived to heavy flames and smoke spreading from the one-story wood-frame home to a palm tree in the front yard, Szymanski said.

Firefighters brought the fire under control and confined most of the damage to the interior of the home. Although the home was unoccupied and there were no utilities connected to it, neighbors said they had seen people in the house, even just before the fire, Szymanski said.

No one was injured in the fire, which caused about $60,000 in damage to the home. Las Vegas Fire & Rescue is investigating the incident.
