Attempted murder/suicide

A man Metro Police said shot his daughter in the chest today before turning the gun on himself has been identified as Rene Espinal, 52, of Las Vegas, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

Metro Lt. Mark Reddon said officers were dispatched about 6 p.m. to the Regency Heights Apartments in the 3600 block of East Lake Mead Boulevard in response to gunshots in the area.

When they arrived, they discovered Espinal with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. A firearm was found near his lifeless body, Reddon said.

Espinal apparently shot his daughter two or three times in the upper torso, police said. The woman, believed to be in her late 30s to early 40s, was rushed to University Medical Center in serious condition.

Reddon said she was alert and talking when police arrived, though it was not immediately clear how badly she was injured.

“She could have internal damage,” Reddon said. “It’s really hard to say.”
