51s nipped by one run at Tucson in battle for first place

Brandon Hicks hit a home run for the Las Vegas 51s Thursday in the ninth inning at Tucson, but it wasn’t enough in a 6-5 defeat.

Tucson, which entered leading Las Vegas by a half game in the Pacific Southern standings, used a five-run second inning to take the lead for good.

The 51s trimmed the deficit to 6-4 in the fifth inning when Hicks tripled and scored on a single from Eric Campbell. Campbell scored the second run of the inning on an RBI single from Francisco Pena.

Zach Lutz also homered for Las Vegas, which also received two hits from Pacific Coast League all-star second baseman Wilmer Flores.

The series continues Friday.
