To be an American: Spelling out why America’s great

Last week we asked you what it means to be an American. We received a great response. Here are some of the letters and comments. We’ll publish more in the coming days.

What does it mean to be an American? To me, a senior citizen and an Air Force veteran, it means being able to live out my latter years in comfort in a great city as Las Vegas, even on a modest pension. It means living in a country where freedom of speech, human and civil rights are guaranteed and protected. It means living in a society that looks after its senior citizens and their well-being. It means living in a country with great educational opportunities and modern technology amenities. Being an American means:

  1. America is about truth and justice. Sometimes the two intersect. But in the absence of justice, being Americans we must always strive for and achieve the truth.

  2. One of the most important things about being an American Is, I am free to write and say what ever I want and not be fearful that the government will come for me. Following the rules and using common sense are a big part of living in a free country.
