Federal funds are being promised to help battle a wildfire that has forced more than 500 people out of homes and is still growing on Mount Charleston near Las Vegas.

Federal Emergency Management Agency official Veronica Verde said Monday the fire management assistance declaration means Nevada can be reimbursed for up to 75 percent of eligible firefighting costs.

Fire managers reported Monday that more than 750 firefighters are now battling the more than 22-square-mile Carpenter 1 Fire.

It started with a lightning strike a week ago in steep and rugged terrain, and has reached the crest of the mountain 30 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

No injuries are reported and no structures have burned, but homes in Trout, Kyle and Lee canyons are evacuated.

Officials are reporting 15 percent containment.
