Stabbed inmate is stable after gang fight

An inmate was repeatedly stabbed in a fight between rival gangs at the Warm Springs Correctional Center in Carson City, state prison officials said Wednesday.

The inmate, who was not identified, was taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno where he was listed in stable condition. Another prisoner suffered minor injuries.

The fight occurred Tuesday afternoon. E.K. McDaniel, deputy director of operations for the state Department of Corrections, said an investigation is underway.

There is heightened security at the prison with officers escorting small groups of inmates to various locations. The prison is not in lockdown and visitors will be allowed on the normal Saturday, Sunday and Monday schedules.

Further details were not released.
