Coroner IDs swimmer who died at Lake Mead

A man who died Sunday while swimming in Lake Mead has been identified by the Clark County Coroner’s Office as Curtis James Ficarrotta, 30, of Las Vegas.

Ficarrotta was swimming with friends about 2 p.m. in a small cove east of Callville Bay when he began to struggle, prompting a witness to call 911, Lake Mead National Recreation Area spokeswoman Christie Vanover said.

Metro Police divers located and recovered Ficarrotta’s body just before 11 a.m. Monday, Vanover said. The cause and manner of death were pending.

In a separate incident, a 35-year-old Chicago man disappeared Thursday afternoon after jumping into the lake without a life jacket near Sentinel Island in the Boulder Basin, the Associated Press reported.

The National Park Service reported that the man was last seen about 4 p.m. between Painter’s Cove and Castle Reef. The man had not been found as of Tuesday morning.
