Punishing Deen hurts the little guy

Who is really getting hurt here: Paula Deen with an estimated net worth of $16 million or the folks of all colors making the products at companies that will fold without her name on the endorsement because sponsors drop her?

Remember, she only gets a royalty fee; the companies and their employees will be the ones that really suffer. Do we really need more unemployed Americans?

She has apologized time and again, and who among us has not sinned and asked for forgiveness? Michael Vick is back in the NFL making millions of dollars; Chris Brown is back in the entertainment business making millions. So where is the equity here?

I hate racism just like the majority of us, but something isn’t right or equal when you look at the big picture. Remember: Sticks and stones will break your bones but words are a Constitutional right, no matter what, so long as no one is in bodily danger.

  1. Got a news flash for you Charles. Sometimes it's not just about money.

  2. This extreme reaction to Pauls Deen is absurd.
Al Sharpton keeps his job on MSNBC,althought a blatant racist in his own right. I only hope there will be a backlash in her favor,as Americans wake up and understand that she meant no harm, although pretty darn ignorant in her language--but it was a zillion years ago. Forgive and move on I say.

  3. The blame can be thrown all over the place, but it still rests with Paula Deen. After all is said and done, she did this to herself. And she is continuing to destroy her own empire by her lame apologies that seem to blame others for doing what she did. You can't transfer everything bad that has happened to her in some roundabout fashion to the people out here. The buck stops with her. In my estimation, her mouth got her into trouble. And it still is getting her into hot water. THAT is the one and only reason her empire is crumbling. To say that people will lose jobs and throw the blame on the people out here just deflects where the responsibility really rests. HER. Make up excuses all you want, but Paula Deen set all this into motion. And it is still going on. Because her apology tour is failing. It's not genuine. It's forced. It's damage control. It's not heartfelt. Most of the people out here can see this. THAT is why her empire is crumbling around her ears. It's all catching up to her.

  4. In growing up in the 50's and 60's, racial slurs were commonplace. All Races used them. I, if asked, have used slurs over and over in my younger years. You had the Black jokes, the Polish jokes, the Jewish jokes, the Catholic jokes, the Italian jokes, etc. That was the culture we grew up with. Since, we as a people have become more aware of the hurt we cause with our words. Now we laugh at Blondes. I believe we will be discrimminatory in our speech, no matter what or how we say it, forever and ever. It's in our nature and it's very sad.

  5. Anyone want to discuss how much cardiologists are going to miss Paula Deen's style of cooking which helps lead many to have coronary artery disease, heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes?

  6. "Racism" is a cultural attitude - taught, not inherentwide-spread. Remember the song from South Pacific?

    You've got to be taught
    To hate and fear,
    You've got to be taught
    From year to year,
    It's got to be drummed
    In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

    . . .

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

Was Ms Deen wrong to have used the words she used? By the way I was taught (and that I taught my children), yes. By the currently popular American standard, yes. By the standard of late 1940s Georgia under which she was reared, no. In other posts, especially that by BChap, we have evidence that the "N Word" is currently acceptable for use by some but is barred for use by others. Future introduces the current developing mini-furor over the phrase "Creepy white-a*s cracker."

Yes, Ms Deen was caught using politically incorrect language. She should have apologized, once and loudly, explained that she was using language she was expressing an attitude she was taught as a tiny child raised in the segregated Georgia of the late 1940's, that she recognized such an attitude was long out-dated and is now totally unacceptable, that she was doing her very best to "unlearn" her earliest training, that she apologized for the hurt caused by her words. AND THEN MOVED ON, SAYING NO MORE!!!!

Much of her current problems stem from her subsequent failure to just say "I screwed up when I said that. I sincerely apologize to those I offended. I'm doing my very best to change the ways I learned as a child. Next question."

  7. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I don't care if Paula Dean is racist or not. I never watched her show anyway. I think racism is nothing more than pattern recognition and we are all racist to some extent. It is understanding that and then consciously making a choice not to use race as a factor when it comes to making decisions as to who to trust.

That being said, I do not think it would be prudent for a C.E.O. of a large corporation, to take the chance on alienating enough customers to the point that they may organize a boycott of a company's products and/or services. The way I see it, why take the chance when there's more down side than up side? It's just business and you have to take these things on a case by case basis. Bye-bye Paula.

  8. Paula Deen's contract with the TV Food Network was overdue for renewal. Her ratings, as all those for shows with chefs who "dump and stir," have fallen off. The audiences are more inclined for cooking shows that pair elements of reality TV and competition together. She probably would not have been renewed thus giving the network a lame excuse not to do so. WRT her brand and all the product sales, Deen will probably do better. Why? Most retailers who dropped her products carry and sell them with contracts that give them exclusivity sale rights. Now, she can market and sell at will without any restrictions and limitations. BTW, note the retailers who dropped her products: JCP, Sears, etc. Not really doing very well themselves now are they?

  9. The politically correct, self righteous leftists are out in full bloom with their venomous attacks on Paula Deen. Yet, they seem to have no problem giving a pass to the likes of Bill Maher, Al Sharpton, Louis Farrakhan and, now, the poster boy of bad taste, Alec Baldwin. Serial sexual abusers such as "Sick Willie" Clinton and lady-killers such as Ted Kennedy are lionized by the left. The Commie-leftists are a products of decades of "progressive" manipulation of the public school system that has brain-washed them into thinking day is night and east is west. They have a herd mentality to attack anything traditional in favor of criminals, perverts and illegal behavior. They are taking the USA down to their level, which is rock bottom and filled with raw sewage. and that's their good points!

  10. "Hurts the little guy"? What an excuse for condoning any and all manners of behavior from simple to extreme. Profit at all costs, regardless of morals, ethics and values!
