If you’re out of quarters and can’t pay the meter or if it expires before you get back, you could face a $20 parking ticket from the city of Las Vegas.
The default amount may seem small, but it can quickly escalate to more than three times the original fine.
The city also issues larger fines for a variety of infractions such as parking in front of a fire hydrant or in a handicapped space, which both carry a $250 fine.
An initial fine for a parking ticket doubles after 30 days and the fine amount is added again 15 days later, raising the default cost to $60.
After 60 days, a Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles hold is issued with another $10 fee. If it’s been nine months and payment still is outstanding, the ticket is sent into collection with an additional fee of 18 percent of the balance tacked onto the cost. Nine months after that, another 25 percent of the balance is added to the amount owed.
The city has a number of tools it uses to encourage payment, including placing holds on vehicle registrations, immobilizing vehicles or referring the debt to a collection agency.
The escalating fines for nonpayment can add up and has left some Las Vegans and a couple of Californians owing the city thousands of dollars.
Ten people owe the city at least $3,000 in parking fines, with the top offender’s tickets and late fees totaling $5,250.
The names of these individuals are protected by Nevada statute, but the city does release their license plate numbers as part of the public record.
Here’s a look at the city’s 10 biggest scofflaws with the largest outstanding fines:
