Pitcher Zack Wheeler is shown during Las Vegas 51s practice at Cashman Field Tuesday, April 2, 2013. The 51s open the season Thursday against the RiverCats at Sacramento. This is the first year the 51s are affiliated with the Mets.

The Las Vegas 51s plated two runs in the second inning Sunday at the Sacramento RiverCats to take the lead for good in snapping a three-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory.

Top pitching prospect Zack Wheeler (2-1) had his second straight solid outing for Las Vegas, striking out four and allowing three hits and no runs in five innings.

Last Tuesday in Reno, Wheeler struck out eight and pitched into the seventh inning for his first win.

After surrendering 11 earned runs in 24 innings over five starts to open the season, Wheeler gave up only one earned run in 11 2/3 innings this week.

Collin Cowgill led Las Vegas offensively with a three-run home run in the seventh inning and finished with two runs and two hits. Eric Campbell and Omar Quintanilla each also had two hits for Las Vegas, which finishes its four-games series Monday at Sacramento.

On Tuesday, the 51s return to Cashman Field to face Round Rock, the Texas Rangers’ top affiliate.
