The Las Vegas Wranglers were handed their first defeat of the season, falling to the Alaska Aces 3-2 before a crowd of 4,147 at the Orleans Arena on Friday night.
Defenseman Greg Coburn got the Wranglers off to a good start, scoring the lone goal of the first period for a 1-0 lead. Aces center Brendan Connolly would net two goals in the second period as Alaska claimed a 2-1 lead after two periods.
The Wranglers' Chris Francis scored his second goal of the season to tie the game at the 13:00 mark of the third period, but Alaska would answer a couple of minutes later with a tie-breaking goal by Andy Taranto. The goal would prove to be the game-winner. With the loss, Las Vegas drops to 2-1 on the season.
Wranglers goaltender Mitch O'Keefe stopped 42 of 45 Aces shots in his first start of the year.
The same teams face off Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at the Orleans Arena in the second of the three-game series this weekend.
