Switch to new computer system could delay unemployment checks

CARSON CITY — Distribution of unemployment checks could be delayed a day as the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation switches to a new $35 million computer system, officials said.

The system is being brought online in stages and already has resulted in minor delays in the ability of some unemployed to file claims, officials said.

Director Frank Woodbeck said the department’s call center started logging into the new system and taking telephone claims today.

Woodbeck asked that clients be patient.

“The new Internet claims filing portion is also staging for launch and is expected to be available for claimants to file online through the web within the next 72 hours,” he said.

The system, paid for by the federal government, has taken nearly four years to install.
