State department adds telephone lines to receive unemployment claims

Troubles getting the new, $35 million computer system fully functioning has forced the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation to install additional telephone lines residents can call to file unemployment claims.

The department said the two additional numbers — one in Las Vegas and the other in Northern Nevada — will bring the total number of lines to receive the jobless claims to slightly more than 600.

The new number in Las Vegas is 702-486-3387. That number can be called if a claimant is unable to get through on main number, 702-486-0350, which some residents were calling and getting a busy signal from, according to the department.

The department says it gets an average of 2,000 calls an hour.
