Rain closes portion of Zion-Mount Carmel Highway

Zion-Mount Carmel Highway closure

A section of the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway has been shut down due to heavy rain that inundated the road, according to Zion National Park officials.

The highway has been closed east of Zion National Park between Canyon Junction and the park’s east entrance. Several sections there have flooded, including a ravine approximately a mile west of the small tunnel, where flood waters blocked a road culvert and undercut the road, officials said.

Alternate east/west routes are available via Highway 59 from Hurricane, Utah, to Fredonia, Ariz., and Highway 14 from Cedar City, Utah, to Long Valley Junction and Highway 89.

The road will stay shut overnight and likely through Thursday. Crews will evaluate the damage on Wednesday and begin trying to make the road usable officials said.

The park visitor center, museum, Zion Lodge, campgrounds and shuttle buses will be open and operating as normal.
