Son jailed after threatening mom with sword, handgun, Metro reports

Area of disturbance

A 33-year-old man is in custody, accused of several crimes, including threatening his mother with a sword and a semi-automatic handgun, during a dispute Monday in their northwest Las Vegas home.

Jason Douglas Robbins is in Clark County Detention Center, after his arrest on counts including kidnapping attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a weapon in an occupied structure.

Metro Police said the incident started Monday night with an argument between Robbins and his mother and escalated to involve Robbins’ live-in girlfriend of two years and her daughter.

Witness accounts vary somewhat, but according to a Metro report:

The argument started at the home in the 3900 block of Cobble Creek Lane with Robbins’ mother complaining about the girlfriend’s daughter getting an eyebrow piercing. As the arguing continued, Robbins retrieved a sword and threatened to kill his mother.

The mother didn’t back down, which prompted Robbins to grab his 9 mm handgun and threatened to shoot his mother. At that point, Robbins ordered all three of the women – his mother and his girlfriend and her daughter – to sit, and Robbins commandeered their cellphones. At one point, the mother stood, which led to Robbins firing the gun away from the three.

Robbins ordered his girlfriend to handcuff his mother, which she did.

For about the next hour, Robbins went into a rambling rage, saying he was going to kill his mother, then himself.

Another argument ensued, at which time the family dog entered the room and bit the mother on one of her hands. The mother was able to make it into a second-story bathroom, lock the door and start washing her bite wound. When Robbins began banging on the door, the mother – fearful of being shot – jumped out the bathroom window. From there, she told officers, she blacked out.

Finally, the girlfriend was able to call police. Robbins left before officers arrived, but his Ford Explorer was stopped near the house.

During a subsequent search of the home, officers discovered a sword and sheath, two handcuffs and bullet holes in several walls. They also found a handgun in a bush near the house. The gun had been reported stolen.

Robbins is being detained without bail. A spokesman for the Clark County District Attorney’s Office said formal charges had not been filed.
