Nevada sees big gain in new jobs, but unemployment holds steady

CARSON CITY — Unemployment in Nevada remained steady at 9.5 percent in August from the previous month, with an estimated 129,400 people out of work.

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported today, however, that 11,200 new jobs were created, the largest monthly gain in eight years.

“After all of the monthly ups and down, we appear to be on track to add approximately 20,000 jobs in 2013, on top of the combined 30,000 created in 2011 and 2012,” Gov. Brian Sandoval said.

The department does not report how many are part-time jobs or minimum wage employees.

The 9.5 percent rate remains above the national rate of 7.3 percent and California’s rate of 8.7 percent in July.

Department economist Bill Anderson said the state lost 8,500 jobs in July but rebounded in August. He said the better picture of the job market is to look at the summer months as a whole.

From June through August, the state gained 7,900 jobs.

Unemployment in Clark County inched down from 9.7 percent in July to 9.6 percent in August, with an estimated 94,300 people jobless. But the number of people working fell by 5,400 from July to a total of 1,236,300 in August.

The department reported construction employment in Clark County grew to 37,300, up 1,100 from July. Manufacturing employment remained at 20,200. The hotel-casino segment reported 158,100 workers, or 100 less than in July. Trade, transportation and utilities had 157,700 workers on the payrolls, up 1,700 from July.
