Deaths of elderly women killed in separate incidents ruled homicides

Two women killed in separate homicides Saturday were identified today as Dixie Chaney Jones, 71, and Karen Vernel Hevener, 56, both of Las Vegas, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

Henever died Saturday morning from a forced drowning in a backyard pool, and Jones died later that night from a bullet wound to her stomach, coroner’s officials said. Both deaths were ruled a homicide.

Henever drowned after a fight with a man identified as Neal Huff on Saturday morning inside a home at 5879 Sleepy Spruce Street, according to a Metro Police arrest report. The fight entered the backyard, where both Huff and Henever fell in the pool.

After a brief struggle, Huff allegedly drowned Henever in the pool and then attempted and failed to kill himself several times, the report said. Metro arrested Huff on one count of murder.

A 16-year-old boy and William Copeland, 19, are suspected of shooting Jones after she resisted their attempt to rob her. Copeland was arrested on counts of murder with a deadly weapon, victim over 60 years of age; attempted robbery with a deadly weapon, victim over 60 years of age; and conspiracy to commit robbery.
