Trash fire spreads, causes $75,000 damage to apartment building

A fire in a trash can outside an apartment building spread to the roof, damaging two units and causing an estimated $75,000 damage, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters responded about 4:20 p.m. to a fire burning in the trash can against the apartment building at 840 King Richard Ave., near Russell and Paradise roads. By the time crews arrived, the fire had spread to the building's roof, Fire Department officials said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze within about 20 minutes later, an no one was injured.

The fire caused moderate damage to one apartment and smoke and water damage to another unit, officials said. Both families living in those apartments were displaced.

The fire also destroyed 35 U.S. Postal Service mailboxes.
