letter to the editor:

Armed rebellion is wrong approach

The headline of the Sunday letter “Feds are trying to ruin rancher” is not an accurate statement.

The feds are trying to collect taxes from a millionaire who has refused to acknowledge the U.S. government. Cliven Bundy has weapons, so why would anyone expect the government to approach him unarmed? He should pay his taxes and use the range like all the other ranchers.

What if these were armed Mexican-American ranchers, or armed African-Americans demanding their land back displaying a closed-fist “power salute”? Or, what if these were armed Muslims protesting some U.S. policy? Yes, I’m playing the race card, as they say. But, let’s be honest. Would you really still support their armed resistance?

Remember when it was not uncommon to say, “If you don’t like it, leave”? Now, that same group seems to say, “If you don’t like it, get your guns.”

We should be making changes through the legal system, not armed rebellion. Sometimes the legal system decides in your favor and sometimes not. That’s the way it is. Try that in another country and you will appreciate our differences.
