First-time unemployment claims in July down from previous year

CARSON CITY — The number of people submitting first-time claims for unemployment benefits rose in July compared to the previous month but was down compared to the same period a year ago.

First-time claims were down 13 percent compared to July 2013, and this is the 20th consecutive month claims have fallen compared to the same month the previous year.

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported today that 15,441 Nevadans filed initial applications for unemployment benefits last month, compared with 14,503 in June.

Department Economist Bill Anderson said it is a “typical seasonal trend.”
